March for Gugulethu District Hospital

On Wednesday June 21, 2023, hundreds marched in protest towards the KTC Day Hospital, demanding the construction of a new district hospital, as well as improvements to KTC. Social organizations–like Movement for Change and Social Justice (MCSJ), Neighborhood Watch, Unite Behind, Peoples’ Health Movement, and Alternative Information and Development Centre–joined demonstrators from Gugulethu and abroad. The protest concluded with MCSJ delivering their memorandum to Patti Olckers, the district director of health in the Western Cape government. The director signed in receipt of the memorandum, signaling the government’s acknowledgement of the community’s grievances.

On September 4, 2019, about 200 residents of Gugulethu rallied towards the KTC Day Hospital, Dental Clinic, and police station for improved health care services and the construction of a new District Hospital. The memorandum central to the 2019 protest was co-created by MCSJ and the hospital and looked to address the hospital's many problems such as wheelchair inaccessibility, staff shortages, broken toilets, and insufficient trauma wards. The collaboration between MCSJ and the healthcare workers has been a key aspect of the campaign.
